Reliable pre-treatment for septic sludge

Wherever wastewater is not fed to a sewage treatment plant via the sewer system, but is treated decentrally, septic sludge is produced. This septic sludge collects either in simple septic tanks or in more modern small wastewater treatment plants and must be removed at regular intervals to be treated in a central plant.

Where possible, this is done at a centralized wastewater treatment plant with sufficient surplus capacity; but where such a plant is not available nearby, a separate on-site plant for the complete treatment of septic sludge can also be built.

Septic Sludge

Treatment of septic sludge

The septic sludge is usually delivered by tankers and must in any case be cleaned of coarse material and contaminants such as sanitary products and plastic particles etc. before further treatment. This cleaning is necessary for the reliable and economical operation of subsequent stages of septic sludge treatment or co-treatment of the sludge in sewage treatment plants. Depending on the size of the treatment plant, it is advisable to first store the septic sludge in buffer tanks after mechanical pre-treatment, from which it can then be continuously transferred to further treatment.

For the acceptance of septic sludge, HUBER has developed special septage receiving stations, which have been successfully in use worldwide for decades. With the use of this machine technology, it is then possible for the delivery trucks to empty quickly and for the removal of all coarse material and contaminants to take place reliably and without disturbances.

For septic sludge treatment plants our HUBER Screw Presses Q-PRESS® and S-PRESS are also used.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Faecal sludge is the sewage sludge from domestic sewage treatment plants. Faecal sludge usually consists of wastewater with a concentrated content of faeces, food waste, toilet paper, sanitary products as well as mineral components.

For the treatment of faecal sludge, a multi-stage system consisting of coarse screen and grit trap can be useful before the faecal sludge is discharged into the sewage treatment plant.

Wherever residential buildings are not connected to a sewer system but use a decentralised domestic sewage treatment plant, faecal sludge accumulates.

This faecal sludge is disposed of via collection vehicles and transported to a central sewage treatment plant or a special faecal sludge processing facility for treatment. The collection vehicles usually empty the faecal sludge into special receptions stations, also referred to as sludge acceptance plants.

Using a sludge acceptance unit before the faecal sludge is fed into the wastewater treatment plant will clean the raw material from undesired matter, such as sanitary products and plastic articles, etc. This cleaning is necessary to keep the load on the sewage treatment plant resulting from the introduced faecal sludge as low as possible.
