HUBER is pleased to announce that, after a competitive bidding process, the $60M dollar La Crosse 2021 Wastewater Treatment Facility Upgrades selected HUBER for several elements of the project including biosolids drying, sludge screening and a new headworks screen.
On the headworks side of things, the project is being driven by two failing comminutors, which were routinely flooding and causing significant bypass issues. To overcome this issue, and still work within the very limited space available on the operation deck, La Crosse selected the HUBER Multi-Rake bar Screen RakeMax® CF.
The RakeMax® CF with its vertical orientation allowed the engineer to combine both comminutor channels into one larger channel, directing 100% of the influent through one screen that is capable of handling full Peak Hourly Flow conditions. Special influent baffle plates can allow emergency overflow/bypass in case of plant power outage.
In addition to updating their headworks, La Crosse wanted to address issues in their biosolids handling process. Recent wet weather has made the practice of injecting biosoilds into soil difficult due to odor, and storing the material to apply later is not an option for La Crosse. Wishing to find new avenues for biosolids handling and disposal, La Crosse settled on drying their biosolids to provide more disposal possibilities including:
- More stability in storage; the product can be stored long term without changing composition
- Land application, which becomes more attractive with lower odor
- Dry biosolids can also be used as an energy source
A sludge screen was also procured in order to remove debris from the sludge stream to defend the digester as well as make the final biosolid product more marketable.
Staffing and operational needs were also a big consideration when planning and selecting equipment for this project. La Crosse keeps regular business hours, so most of their equipment and processes run within an 8 hour window during the day. This means that equipment either needs to be able to be easily shut down for the night, or capable of running unattended with minimal risk.
In making their equipment selection for the HUBER Belt Dryer BT, the folks at La Crosse visited another HUBER site in Sheboygan, WI which also run unattended overnight for a number of nights a year.
The RakeMax® CF was also selected for its ease of maintenance. The screen placement is against the influent wall. Any other screen would require maintenance access in front of the screen, which isn’t possible. The RakeMax® CF doesn’t have a lower bearing or any submerged wear items, therefore is the only screen that would work for this application.
