The first step of operationally reliable and efficient wastewater treatment

The separation of solids in wastewater with screens and fine screening systems is the first step in municipal and industrial wastewater treatment.

The main task here is to remove all coarse and foreign materials that could inhibit or hinder the function of subsequent wastewater treatment stages.

The following factors, among others, must be taken into account when planning an operationally reliable solids separation solution:

  • Maximum required hydraulic throughput
  • Expected screenings quantities
  • Required bar spacing or separation capacity for solids
  • Influence of sewer system (surges, deposits, pumping stations, etc.)
  • Redundancy requirements
  • Installation situation (channel, tank)
  • Feeding (by gravity, pump, hoist, ...)

All this information and framework conditions are then taken into account for the choice of the right machine technology and determine the number, size and type of screening systems.

A Wide Range of Screens, Fine Screens and Ultra-Fine Screens for any Application

HUBER has decades of experience in dimensioning and selecting the optimum machine technology for each individual mechanical cleaning application.

As different requirements also demand different screen systems, HUBER has developed a wide range of various screens, fine screens and ultra-fine screens , which are in use in thousands of installations worldwide.

The separated and removed screenings with household waste, faecal matter, toilet paper and mineral solids are then passed on to the screenings treatment system, which is ideally planned together with the screening plant.

From screen building to sewage sludge drying: complete modernisation of the La Crosse wastewater treatment plant with HUBER

HUBER Technology Inc., the Denver, North Carolina-based subsidiary of HUBER SE, was awarded the contract for the modernisation of the La Crosse wastewater treatment plant located on Isle La Plume. The scope of supply includes a HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax® CF in the screen building in the inlet to the WWTP, a HUBER Belt Dryer BT 18 for sewage sludge drying, and a HUBER Sludgecleaner STRAINPRESS® for primary sludge screening. The total investment volume of the modernisation package amounts to about 60 million US dollars.

Frequently Asked Questions

The size of the opening width on the one hand and the shape of the screening element on the other.

With one-dimensional screening elements such as bars, the separation efficiency is generally lower than with two-dimensional elements such as perforated plates, mesh, etc. This is mainly due to the fact that it is very difficult for long-fibre material such as hair to pass through a perforated plate.

This requirement can only be met by a screen that covers the full range of screen opening widths from fine to coarse screens.

In addition, the screen bars must be designed with the respective geometry to meet the corresponding requirement.

A typical screen that fulfills all these requirements is our HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screen RakeMax®

Machines with a steep installation angle are best suited for such applications.

This screen installation option allows the installation space to be very compact, especially in the direction of flow.

Typical examples are our HUBER Multi-Rake Bar Screens RakeMax® and RakeMax® CF as well as the HUBER Belt Screen EscaMax®, HUBER Coarse Screen TrashMax® and HUBER Grab Screen TrashLift.
