The first smartMBR is sold now and will be soon installed at Le Roy High School in the US state of Alabama.

Le Roy High school has around 830 students and 60 teachers. It produces approximately 19,000 US gallons/day wastewater (72m³/day). Currently the school treats the wastewater through a fixed bed activated sludge secondary treatment system with final chlorination. The treated wastewater is then discharged to an adjacent stream.

However to reduce the environmental impact on the stream new environmental regulations are being implemented on 1st July. These require a big reduction in suspended solids being discharged and a removal of the chlorination system.

Local consulting engineers McFadden Engineering were commissioned to engineer a solution for the wastewater system, so the new environmental criteria can be met. They concluded that MBR would be the appropriate technology. McFadden Engineering had seen the HUBER smartMBR model on display at IFAT 2012, and thought this would be a perfect system to serve the school.

In January, public bids were invited to provide the MBR system for Le Roy High School.  HUBER USA (in conjunction with the Alabama State local representatives ‘Pump & Process’) were successful in securing the order to supply 1x smartMBR size 75, which provides a treatment capacity of 75m³/day.

The unit is scheduled to be delivered to site by 1st June, providing 4 weeks for connection, start-up and biomass stabilization before the new discharge limits come into effect.
