The wastewater treatment process of a conventional municipal sewage treatment plant consists of a mechanical and a subsequent biological treatment stage.

Increasing demands on the quality of the treated wastewater, however, increasingly require additional treatment stages, which are often referred to as third and fourth treatment stages, or collectively as “advanced wastewater treatment”.

The aim of advanced wastewater treatment is the reduction of one or more of the following pollutants: solids, COD, BOD, phosphorus, nitrate, micropollutants and germs.

Frequently Asked Questions

In wastewater treatment, tertiary treatment means the third treatment stage and refers to processes of advanced wastewater treatment in which a further reduction of nutrients (nitrogen and/or phosphorus) takes place.

The first two stages of wastewater treatment are mechanical treatment (primary treatment) and biological treatment (secondary treatment).

In wastewater treatment, quaternary treatment means the fourth treatment stage and refers to processes of advanced wastewater treatment in which micropollutants are eliminated.

The first three stages of wastewater treatment are mechanical treatment (primary treatment), biological treatment (secondary treatment) and phosphorus and/or nitrogen elimination (tertiary treatment).
