Minimise wear and increase operating reliability

For the operating safety and reliability of wastewater treatment plants, it is necessary to separate the grit transported with the wastewater and other mineral materials from the putrescible organic matter. For this purpose, grit chambers of various designs are used in practice. Depending on the type of grit trap, grease can also be separated in addition to grit.

The removal of grit from the wastewater serves to prevent operational troubles, such as grit sedimentation (in aeration tanks and digesters), increased wear (of pumps, stirrers) and clogging (of removal hoppers or pipelines). In addition, it is also used to reduce material wear of mechanical sludge treatment equipment (e.g. centrifuges, etc.). The aim is to separate as much as possible of the grit and inorganic material up to 0.20 mm grain diameter.

Different types of HUBER Grit Chambers

Especially grit chambers such as the HUBER Grit Trap GritWolf®  are capable of separating fine sand (“sugar sand”) of significantly smaller grain size with a high separation efficiency.

Due to the considerable organics content in the classified grit, longitudinal grit traps are nowadays additionally equipped with an aeration system. This partly prevents the organic matter from settling in the grit chamber and, at the same time, floating matter (grease) can be partly blown up by the injected air and retained in a separate grease trap.

Special grease removal systems remove the grease automatically and pass it on for further utilisation.

Different types of HUBER Grit Chambers are available for the separation of grit and grease from wastewater.

The grit separated in the grit chamber is usually freed from organic matter in a subsequent grit washing process.

According to Kalbskopf, the design of aerated grit chambers is always based on the retention time of the wastewater in the grit chamber.

Unaerated grit chamber systems are always dimensioned according to the surface loading rate.

In addition to the desired sedimentation of grit, undesired separation of organic matter also occurs in the grit chamber. In order to prevent this separation of organic matter as far as possible, grit channels are designed with aeration to prevent the sedimentation of organic matter.

However, even aerated grit traps are unable to ensure reliable separation of grit from organics. This can only be achieved and guaranteed by a well performing grit washing plant, such as the HUBER Coanda Grit Washer RoSF4.

Depending on the type of grit trap, they separate the grit either by gravity (grit channels, lamellae separators) or centrifugal force (circular and vortex grit traps). Scraper blades or screw conveyors are often used to clear a grit channel. Solids removal in the further course of the process is effected by pump, grit classifier or integrated grit classifying screw. HUBER grit traps are available in many different designs.

The DWA Code of Practice M369 specifies an average amount of grit trap material of 60 l per 1000 m³ of wastewater.

HUBER grit traps are usually dimensioned to have a grit separation efficiency of 95 % for a grain size ≥ 0.20 mm.

The HUBER Grit Trap GritWolf® is designed as a lamella grit trap and has a higher separation efficiency of 90% for grit particles ≥ 75 μm. This grit trap can also be used to separate fine and ultrafine sand ("sugar sand").
